Pete: Uh, well, you know how sometimes there'll be a pack of coyotes that are feasting on a rabbit? And there's always one small runt of a coyote that's being kept from the meal?
Steph: Yes.

i take back any and all narrative critiques i had of firebringer when i was a bougie 14 year old thinking i knew my shit. this is par for the course in terms of starkid's narrative cohesiveness and the chorn twist is the funniest fucking thing ive ever seen
#sources: i have a literature degree now#jude is talking#starkid#firebringer#i think the thing i have the biggest problem with is molag#which is saying a lot becuase i don't really think her character is thaaat bad#i just think that them specifically casting 1. the black woman as the older violent warmaker#2. the white woman as the benevolent peacemaker#and 3. the mexican woman as the one whos actions are all motivated by laziness#wasn't the best move in hindsight? but i also don't think it was necessarily intentional. on meredith and laurlo's part at least. but i fee#like molag was always intented to be a black woman and it doens't rub me right#but at least i am now old enough to understand that these things are things that starkid themselves recognize and are learning and growing#rather than getting up on my pedestal and trying to cancel them completelty lol#these tags are getting too long but im still gonna keep spouting#i've made two posts in the past two days about two different pieces of media that treat their black women a weird way and while im glad i a#no longer the party pooper i used to be who couldn't enjoy any media without it being morally perfect in every way#i still think there's a lot to be said about how i still love starkid and feel so bad about hsmtmts#because of all the OTHER shit#like.#starkid has proven themselves time and time again to belearning and growing#whereas hsmtmts writers are still defending some of the shit they did in that show. the biphobia. the racism. the hypocrisy when it comes t#their characters.#also not to mention firebringer was 2016. the real egregious stuff#that starkid themselves have wanted to address the most have been from the shows in like 2010-11#hsmtmts was still being biphobic as shit in TWENTY TWENTY THREE

which is gayer? SIX or Adamandi (real)
adamandi
#like. gotta break it to you. one of these musicals is canonically lgbtq and it's not the one where women sing about their dead husband yknow#like. idk what to say! but <shrugs>#ask me stuff???#must say the fandoms are really quite different. i'm quite fascinated by the dynamics tbh#also i realise a lot of the queendom(? forgot that was the name for a hot sec) go mad about women in shiny pretty costumes slaying#but also hmmmm adamandi is very much gender for me.( for all the characters. but specifically vincent and beatrix)#and the thing about queerness is it literally gets woven into the narrative. and it's Obvious.#smth about canonical lgbt+ rly is just. it hits. the representation is real? as opposed to fandom interpretations only#(and like... i love fandom interpretations and when people can see a new side to the character that they feel seen in!!!)#(but having it be in the original content is just... yeah... you do feel kinda especially seen)#watching adamandi was a bit like first watching firebringer for me? like except for sexuality it was gender o.O#firebringer was the first musical i saw with a canon wlw couple. and like i'd known that girls could like girls for a while but#there was the small italicised oh moment where i was like ''this is actually real'' <it's maybe worth noting i wasn't very active on soc me#about consuming things other than content. so i wasn't very exposed to the community at large. so representation in media mattered!!>#similarly it's been a while since then and both online and irl i've found people who are more open about it and accepting. i've been very#very lucky in that sense. to have specific irl friendgroups where we're all out to each other <based on sentiment? i think most of us#including me. aren't openly out irl> ... and online i'm really glad to have friends who Get It and are similar to me. but the representatio#... !!! omg hsnfjkfgdsdsghf yknow?? the representation in adamandi really got me. the pronouns thing especially.#and because the core source material is Like That.. existing fandom is all accepting already. so bonus points i guess#sorry i have turned this silly little question into a reflection prompt.. but. thoughts.#[wow. on further retrospection i've never outed myself at all online either people just saw the ship art and Inferred and]#[to be fair they were Not Wrong. idk. tumblr avvy is very vastly different from irl me but neither of us feel comfortable stating it so-]#[also worthy mention of the musicals fandom that exposed me to the whole concept of lgbtq+ being a Thing at the ripe young age of 14]#[what a way to discover it. really. i say this with extreme fondness. conversely i have friends who decided through genshin or anime so idk#<i'm aware of the diverse casting thing for six!! i think it's very cool!! i also realise the show plot doesn't really have much to do w it

First character revamp for the Western AU! Because it’s hella fantasy western now, I’m going crazy with developing the world.
So Ignacio! He’s the towns former Firebringer. The firebringer’s job is to. Well. Fetch fire for the town, but usually they have fire kept in their house. Jars of flames, and a evergoing source of fire! Ignacio is the FORMER firebringer because he abused his power, and burned down the sheriffs house! So he was stripped of the firebringer title! But they uh. Didn’t exactly manage to take all his fire away from him. He kept a few jars of fire, and his firestaff.
Pump is being trained to be the next firebringer! It’s not going- perfect. But he’s trying!

LIT-322: Discussion
Apr 20, 2025 4:21 PM
Happy Week 8!!
One recent work of contemporary fiction that made an impact on screen for me personally is The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins. I enjoyed the book for its deep character study of Coriolanus Snow and its subtle commentary on power, control, and performance. The film adaptation stayed mostly true to the source material, but it felt more fast-paced and slightly less introspective. The book’s slow unraveling of Snow’s moral decay and inner conflict was more immersive, while the movie focused more on the spectacle and external conflict. I appreciated the film's performances and lyrical soundtrack design (especially Rachel Zegler's performance) but I found myself missing some of the background stories that made the novel so good.
Different mediums prioritize different storytelling elements. I agree with the idea that adaptations have to make hard choices to appeal to broad audiences, but I disagreed with the notion that something is always “lost” in the process. Sometimes, film can add new dimensions to a story through visual storytelling, casting, and score. For example, the original Hunger Games movie was a perfect movie to screen translation.
When it comes to genre, Africanfuturism has really showed up in recent pop culture. Black Panther is the perfect example of how Africanfuturist stories thrive on screen. The visuals, costume design, and technology rooted in African culture created an immersive, futuristic world that felt both magical and historical. The Mufasa movie on Disney+ also taps into Africanfuturist themes by reimagining an African-inspired legacy through powerful visual landscapes that bring the wilds of Africa to life. These films show how Africanfuturism can be both a celebration of heritage and an imaginative leap forward in storytelling.
If I could only choose two mediums as my go-to for escape, I’d choose books and TV series. Books offer depth, introspection, and a slow burn of discovery, perfect for genres like magical realism or character-driven stories. TV Series, on the other hand, are great for genres like fantasy and supernatural fiction where worldbuilding can be enhanced by visual and auditory elements. I'm not too much of a movie buff, but I have a ton of TV and book series that are my comfort media.
For TV Series: The 100, Anne with an E; Parks and Rec; Avatar: the Last Airbender; Game of Thrones (ignoring the last season); & The Shannara Chronicles
For Books: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins; Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas; Harry Potter by JK Rowling; Firebringer by David Clement Davies; The Legend of Holly Claus by Brittney Ryan; & Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
